Decluttering My Makeup Collection

Decluttering

In high school my makeup collection was rather simple: black eyeshadow and black eyeliner. I didn’t even own a tube of mascara because I was too scared I’d poke myself in the eye with the wand. Things have changed quite a bit over the years and I’ll confess my collection has gotten slightly out of hand. Does anyone really need 30 some blushes? Probably not.

There’s been a lot of talk about decluttering on some of my favorite Youtuber’s channels lately and it inspired me to go through my makeup and really narrow things down. So I started swatching, looking for duplicates or colors I just wouldn’t really wear in general. I used products I had completely forgot about and it was pretty easy to decide which I should keep and which I should give away to family and friends. (My sister is pretty excited about it!)

While rummaging through my makeup, I rediscovered quite a few things I used to love, which I’m hoping to make into a later post. I used to be obsessed with the Bare Minerals loose eyeshadows, the quality is amazing but they can get really messy and proving my point I proceeded to spill one into my lap. That was super fun to clean up! So I decided just to keep some of the more unique shades. I also collected most of Ulta’s blushes because they’re actually rather nice quality, but I was able to get rid of some of the ones that had too much glitter or weren’t very flattering for my skin tone.

If you didn’t realize by now, I’m a bit of a lipstick addict. I haven’t quite come to terms with getting rid of any of those, but I do have plenty of lip glosses I don’t use. Most of the time they come in gift sets and they just go to waste so why not give them away? I do want to eventually go through my lipsticks to get rid of dupes and shades that really don’t suit me. (Why is it so hard to find a good nude lipstick when you’re pale?!)

There were also some older makeup items I had been holding onto mainly because of the memories, but I decided to finally just toss them. I knew I’d never use them again nor would it be good for my skin, so why take up the space? Then there’s the products that didn’t quite work for me, but for some reason I still kept them because I mean who wants to throw away a nearly full tube of concealer? At the time I didn’t realize I could have returned it, but thankfully now Ulta and Target have really great return policies on their beauty products so no need to waste your money!

Obviously this post will seem sort of contradictory, it’s not like I’m going to stop buying makeup any time soon. (Though I did just make it the entire month of September without buying anything! I’m pretty proud of myself!) But I’m trying to really think about the items I buy and make sure there’s nothing else too similar in my collection. Obviously I want to have content for the blog, but I want to try and focus on the stuff I already have instead of always buying new things.

So thinking about having a clear out of your own? It’s surprisingly refreshing! Honest! If you’re unsure about getting rid of something, set it aside and think about it for a few days. Do you really need it? Do you already own five other things like it? Truth is if it’s not something you’re totally in love with or use everyday it could probably go to another home. Trust me, your family and friends will love you, everybody loves free makeup right?

Also if you didn’t notice, I did a little redesign of the site! I’ve been working on redoing my photography page and it really inspired me to work on this one again! I’d loved the last layout, but I just wanted something a little more simple. Please let me know what you think! I hope you guys like it!
